Important Information About Medicare & Acupuncture
We want to make sure you have all the facts before you begin your wellness journey. One of the most common questions we receive is: “Does Medicare cover acupuncture?”
The answer is yes, but with a significant catch. ### The Medicare “Provider Gap”
While Medicare (specifically Part B) technically added coverage for “Chronic Low Back Pain” in 2020, they currently do not recognize Licensed Acupuncturists as “Medicare Providers.”
What this means for you:
- Medicare will only pay for acupuncture if it is performed by a medical doctor (MD), physician assistant (PA), or nurse practitioner.
- Most independent acupuncture offices—where you receive the highest level of specialized care—are unable to bill Medicare directly. * Because we are Licensed Acupuncturists and not MDs, we cannot “accept” Medicare insurance for your treatments, even if your plan says it is a covered benefit.
How You Can Still Get Care
We believe that seniors shouldn’t be denied the best specialized care due to administrative “red tape.” Here is how our patients typically handle their visits:
- Direct Payment (Self-Pay): Many of our seniors choose our Longevity Membership or individual sessions as a direct investment in their health.
- Medicare Advantage (Part C): If you have a private Medicare Advantage plan (like Humana, UnitedHealthcare, or Aetna), you may have “out-of-network” benefits or specific acupuncture riders that do allow you to see us.
- HSA/FSA: You can almost always use your Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account funds to pay for acupuncture and Medical Qigong.
- Superbills: Upon request, we can provide you with a “Superbill” (a detailed receipt with medical codes). You can submit this to your secondary insurance or Advantage plan to see if they will reimburse you directly.
Why Choose a Specialist Over a Generalist?
While you could technically go to a Medicare-approved MD for acupuncture, most medical doctors only have a few hundred hours of training in “medical acupuncture.”
As Licensed Acupuncturists, we have over 3,000+ hours of clinical training specifically in this medicine. By choosing us, you are choosing a specialist who understands the nuances of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Medical Qigong, and senior-specific longevity.

Frequently Asked Questions
“I have Chronic Low Back Pain. Will you bill Medicare for me?”
Unfortunately, no. Because the federal government hasn’t yet updated its list of “eligible providers” to include acupuncturists, our office cannot submit claims to Original Medicare.
“What is Section B / Part B?”
Medicare Part B is your medical insurance for outpatient services. While it lists acupuncture as a benefit, it currently restricts who can provide it. We stay up-to-date on federal legislation (like the Acupuncture for Our Seniors Act) that aims to fix this.
“Can I use my membership for these treatments?”
Yes! Our membership is the most cost-effective way to receive regular care without worrying about insurance denials or complex paperwork.
Sunshine Wellness Clinic INC treatment is available to all regardless of race, creed, gender, economic status, sexual orientation.
