Compassionate & Gentle Acupuncture Care for Seniors on the Treasure Coast
Working with elders has been one of the most meaningful parts of my career as an acupuncturist. Earlier in my professional journey, I spent three years working with terminally ill patients and their families. That experience helped me develop a deeper understanding of the challenges many older adults face — from chronic pain and mobility limitations to the emotional aspects of aging.
It also taught me something essential: care must always begin with compassion, patience, and respect for each individual.
Today, that experience shapes how I care for patients in my acupuncture practice.
Hospice Experience: How Three Years in Palliative Care Shaped My Approach To Medical Acupuncture Care for Seniors
As an acupuncturist serving the Treasure Coast community, my approach to care has been deeply influenced by three years working with hospice patients. That experience taught me lessons about aging, comfort, and compassion that continue to guide how I treat every patient today.
Working in hospice care allowed me to see firsthand the challenges many older adults face—from chronic pain and mobility limitations to the emotional and physical effects of long-term illness. It also taught me the importance of gentle, patient-centered care.
These lessons have become a foundation of how I practice acupuncture today.
What Hospice Work Taught Me About Caring for the Elderly
Palliative care focuses on improving quality of life, comfort, and dignity. During my time working with terminally ill patients, I learned how important it is to approach each person with patience, respect, and understanding.
Every patient’s situation was different. Many were managing multiple health conditions, medications, or physical limitations. This required careful attention, thoughtful communication, and a caring approach to care.
These experiences helped me develop a deeper appreciation for unique needs and how to support them safely and effectively.
A Thoughtful Approach to Acupuncture
Because of my palliative care experience, I take a particularly tender and attentive approach when treating older adults.
Many many people are understandably cautious about trying acupuncture. My goal is always to make treatments comfortable, safe, and relaxing.
When working with our venerable and aged community, I carefully consider:
• Overall health conditions
• Current medications
• Energy levels and physical comfort
• Sensitivity of the skin or tissues
• Mobility and positioning during treatment
Acupuncture does not need to be intense to be effective. In fact, friendly and understanding treatments are often the most beneficial.
Listening to the Whole Person
One of the most valuable lessons hospice care taught me is the importance of listening.
Often, patients are dealing with more than just physical symptoms. Pain, stress, sleep issues, and emotional strain can all affect overall well-being.
By taking the time to truly listen and understand each patient’s experience, I can tailor acupuncture treatments to support the whole person—not just one symptom.
Supporting Quality of Life
For many, the goal of treatment is not just eliminating symptoms but improving quality of life.
Acupuncture may help support with:
• Chronic pain
• Arthritis and joint stiffness
• Sleep difficulties
• Stress and anxiety
• Neuropathy
• Digestive issues
• Fatigue and low energy
Each treatment plan is individualized and designed to support comfort, balance, and overall wellness.
